Bent license plate ?

Is it a trend nowadays ? I can't understand the logic behind the bending of license plate. The only reason I can think of is to prevent the enforcement officer to properly read your license plate.
However, upon some research in the internet. It seems like a trend set by the Bosozoku gangs where the car is lowered and the license plate easily hit the ground hence they decide to bent it upwards to prevent it scraping the ground.
Anyway, what do you think ? Is it legal ? Is it practical ? Is it fashionable ? In the end, is it nice ?
